This study was intended as an investigation of local industries, using the word “depleted” which is closer to the Chinese meaning of “非存續” to describe the situation of an industry facing decline, discontinued and ends up being disappeared and extinct. The term “depleted local industries” was used to stand for “非存續地方產業” in this study. To conserve the depleted local industries means to conserve the culture of local industries. Culture is intangible and it is hard to be evaluated, therefore this study was designed to establish a model to analyze the process of conservation and regeneration from cultural perspective.
By reviewing the theories related about the cultural industry, sociological research, preservation and conservation of industrial heritage, and discussing the cases in Tainan. The major concept of this research was based on the “circuit of culture” model, which five factors were modified by identity of place, representation of industries, regulation of governance, production of culture consumption and consumption of spaces. The study was derived from the different stages of conserving and regenerating a depleted local industry, discovering the linkage of cultural production and consumption, the representation of collective memory and the power of local participation.
