The quality of building designs has major impact on the construction works, safety, and functionality of the building. However, compared with the construction management in construction phase, most projects have lacked of an effective design checking method, which may frequently leads to the interference with rules and regulations, the conflict with design content, design modification, etc. These imperfections might result in a rise of construction cost, schedule delay, and severely affect the quality and safety of the buildings. Furthermore, new criteria continuously emerge in architecture, ranging from building codes and safety, to the techniques of fabrication and assembly. Until recently, the only means to deal with this complex and growing body of knowledge were human cognition and organizational review processes.
To improve the above-mentioned defeat, this study will develop a feasibility automated rules checking method to enhance the quality and efficiency of designs check. This study processes an IFC-based information model that employs BIM technology to assist the checkers of the building designs to access information according to their needs. First, the process of rule checking will be systematically analyzed. According to the study, necessary and important attributes required for the extended BIM objects will be developed. Those developed BIM objects will later serve as the core of the information platform, on which the participants can easily access and share information. Next, the framework was validated via this case study; the results of this study indicate that the rules checking process can be more efficiency.
