This study investigates pathways to social well-being in Matsu Island society through arts-based practices, focusing on emotional safety, relational engagement, and inclusive interaction. Matsu, a small offshore island in Taiwan, is shaped by its military legacy, geographic isolation, and tightly knit social structures, all of which influence residents’ cultural identity and sense of belonging.
Adopting a/r/tography as the core methodology, the researcher conducted two intergenerational workshops and collected qualitative data through in-depth interviews and participant observation, while inhabiting multiple roles—researcher, co-planner, curator, and artist. The study first analyzed generational dynamics in Matsu and then used these findings to design participatory art experiences that encouraged expression, reflection, and emotional connection.
A key outcome is identifies four types of identity positioning—Rooted, Relational, Functional, and Peripheral—based on different patterns of engagement. These insights inform the creation of a layered “Pathway Map of Social Well-being Participation in Matsu Island Society,” illustrating how residents may shift across stages of participation depending on emotional, contextual, and relational factors.
The research contributes a place-sensitive perspective on social well-being in small-island communities and demonstrates the value of arts-based practices as both an inquiry method and a relational catalyst. Its findings offer practical implications for cultural policy, education, and community-based engagement strategies.
