This study examines the impact of generalist CEOs on strategic distinctiveness. Prior research suggests that generalist CEOs, equipped with diverse career experiences and broad knowledge, are highly valued in the labor market and face lower unemployment risks. As a result, they tend to take more risks in investment and decision-making. Based on this perspective, generalist CEOs are expected to be more inclined to propose distinctive strategies to help firms gain a competitive advantage. However, an alternative view argues that generalist CEOs may lack industry-specific knowledge and be less familiar with the company’s internal and external resources, leading to more conservative strategic choices. To clarify this issue, this study uses a sample of U.S. publicly listed firms from 1993 to 2007 to conduct empirical analyses. It further examines the moderating effects of environmental uncertainty and firm competitiveness on the relationship between generalist CEOs and strategic distinctiveness. The empirical results reveal a significant negative relationship between general ability index and strategic distinctiveness, indicating that generalist CEOs are less likely to adopt distinctive strategies. Cross-sectional analyses further show that this negative relationship is more pronounced when environmental uncertainty is higher or firm competitiveness is lower. Finally, robustness tests confirm the consistency of the main findings, demonstrating the robustness of the results.
