When a tank of liquid is either heated or cooled over a period of time, it is commonly referred to as “batch heating (cooling)”. Batch heating (cooling) are used in many fields, such as manufacturing process, food industry, pharmacy, oil quenching pool, heavy oil heating, etc. There are two kinds of batch heating. If the tank contents are pumped out of the tank, through a heat exchanger, and then back into the tank, it is called external batch heating, while internal batch heating is heated by coils or jackets instead of heat exchanger without tank circulation. In the present study, the objective was to derive one-dimensional analytical solution for both external and internal batch heating, find overall heat transfer coefficient of tank with three dimensional numerical simulation and then develop CAD software for batch heating design. The final result shows that increasing the flow rate could reduce the heat transfer areas. However, the pumping power is the cubic proportional to the flowrate, balance between flowrate and heat transfer area should be considered carefully. The CAD software developed in this study has two main functions: (1) The flow rate of the tank side and the heat exchanger side are known, and then calculate heat transfer area; (2) The flow rate of the tank side and the heat exchanger side are unknown, and calculate the heat transfer area. Users could get reliable design reference from CAD.
