本研究著眼於荷蘭聯合東印度公司在摩鹿加、爪哇以及臺灣地區的堡壘建築，並依序分析各地區堡壘與周圍環境之關係以及堡壘建築本體之意涵，最終綜合上述研究成果並梳理公司海外堡壘發展脈絡。歐洲近代堡壘發展序幕從義大利文藝復興與火砲的出現而展開，義大利軍事工程師發展出能夠抵禦大砲的「義大利系統」堡壘，其迅速成為歐洲公認標準並快速散播在歐洲各地。同時，哈布斯王朝與低地國八十年戰爭爆發，荷蘭軍事工程師從「義大利系統」堡壘設計中學習，並發展出專屬低地國地形的「舊荷蘭系統」堡壘。而後隨著荷蘭聯合東印度公司（VOC）於1602年成立，為壟斷歐洲香料市場並防止其他歐洲敵人偷襲，其在海外據點上建造大量堡壘，此舉使得「舊荷蘭系統」堡壘開始出現在亞洲各地。
公司在亞洲地區建造上百座堡壘，堡壘可依其座落地區劃分成數個貿易網絡，網絡中的堡壘依據其功能、規模以及形式而分成主、次層級。主要堡壘周圍通常具有高度開發的土地與城市治理，次要堡壘周圍則通常具有原住民村落、種植園與重要河道。為分析各地區堡壘與周圍環境之關係以及本體意涵，本研究依序針對各地區歷史背景以及荷蘭東印度公司重要事件進行整理，以了解公司在此地的發展概況；而後利用圖像分析法以及砲彈有效射程分析法，解析各地區堡壘與周圍自然、人造環境之關係，探究荷蘭堡壘是如何適應亞洲自然環境與敵人戰爭形式；最終則承接上述研究，進一步分析堡壘建築本體在形式、規模以及意涵。
從上述整理與研究過程可發現，以荷蘭本土地理環境發展的「舊荷蘭系統」堡壘來到亞洲後，為適應各地自然環境與人造環境，紛紛作出適當的調整。在自然環境適應的部分，主要反映在堡壘擇址上，以低地國低窪地形而設計的「舊荷蘭系統」堡壘為適應據點周圍有許多高地山脈，因而嘗試將堡壘建造於高處，並逐步發展為一高一低的堡壘擇址要點。在人造環境適應的部分，主要反映在如何劃分我族與他者，由於兩者關係會隨地區、時間而浮動，因此堡壘與圍牆之間的關係亦呈現出多種可能性。荷蘭海外堡壘建築在形式、規模以及用途上亦呈現出與荷蘭本土的差異，雖然兩者之間存在連動關係，但荷蘭東印度公司在建造堡壘建築時，逐步以「舊荷蘭系統」為基礎，發展出專屬於亞洲地區的堡壘建築設計。

This thesis focuses on the context of Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) fortresses in Asia and case studies on Moluccas (eastern Indonesia), Java (Indonesia), and Taiwan. The fortresses built by the VOC were based on the specific military system used by the Dutch in 16-17th centuries, which was called “Oudnederlandse Stelsel.” During the Eighty Years War, Dutch military engineers learned from the “Italian system.” They adopted the principle of the relationship between bastions and enfilades and also improved the design to suit the environment in the Low Countries. Then, with the establishment of the VOC in 1602, the company's engineers took the military system overseas, and built “Oudnederlandse Stelsel” fortresses all over Asia.
As mentioned above, when the fortresses designed for the Low Countries came to Asia, they had to be adapted to the Asian environment, including both the natural and human-made environment. The natural environment was mainly reflected in the site selection of fortresses, which were built in the lowlands prior to this time but were being adapted to higher elevations. The human-made environment was reflected in the division between ‘Us’ and ‘Others,’ where the most visible indication was the boundary between the fortresses and the city walls. However, the interaction among ethnic groups varied, so there are many ways to discuss this issue. In this process, the VOC’s fortresses were based on the “Oudnederlandse Stelsel,”and their military system in Asian regions was gradually developed.
