This study aims to explore in depth how non-human actors, such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (AIoT), participate in value co-creation within the smart transportation sector under the framework of Service-Dominant Logic (SD-Logic). In recent years, the global wave of digital transformation has driven many countries to invest in the development of smart cities, where smart transportation has emerged as a core application area. Against this backdrop, it is a crucial research issue to investigate how non-human actors like AIoT integrate information and collaborate with other actors within service ecosystems to co-create value.
However, existing literature offers limited discussion on non-human actors, with most studies focusing on interactions among human actors. To address this gap, the present research combines theoretical and practical perspectives by examining the case of Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co., Ltd. (FETC), a leading firm in Taiwan's smart transportation industry. It investigates how various actors within the case organization collaborate to jointly create a value-laden service ecosystem.
The findings reveal that non-human actors such as AI and IoT technologies actively engage in resource integration and value co-creation through autonomous data collection, real-time analysis, and dynamic decision-making. FETC utilizes AI algorithms to adjust traffic management strategies in real time and employs IoT sensors to gather road and vehicle data, thereby enhancing the efficiency and user experience of the ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) system. Furthermore, the smart parking system, empowered by AIoT applications, improves real-time allocation of parking resources and user convenience, further highlighting the proactive role of digital technologies in value co-creation.
In summary, this study not only expands the scope of SD-Logic by incorporating the role of non-human actors but also provides concrete recommendations for service innovation in the smart transportation sector. Future research is encouraged to include more cases across different contexts to further examine the roles and participation patterns of non-human actors, thereby enriching both theoretical insights and practical applications.
