This paper uses the earnings informativeness to examine the relation between firm diversification and asymmetric information. We find that the change in current stock price of diversified firms contains more information about their future earnings than does the change in the stock price of the focused firms. After decomposing earnings into cash flows and accruals, considering the endogeneity of the diversify decision, and controlling for firm size, growth, future earnings variability, analysts following, and income smoothing, our results are still robust. These findings support the view that diversification can reduce the asymmetric information.
