As time goes on, the innovation of technology and the development of wireless network bring an important reformation for human life. Now, we can inquire the information we needed by wireless, without transmission line. Through the use of IEEE 802.16e technology, man can connect to the Internet in metropolitan area. The wireless communication products using the IEEE 802.16e standard, will support the mobility.
With the convenience of connecting to the Internet, it also means human will have many requirements with wireless communication products; therefore, we demand not only the higher mobility, but also the more battery life time. It’s a distinct issue for energy saving, if mobile devices have more life time. This means users can efficaciously use the wireless machine.
In addition, for the sake of energy saving, IEEE 802.16e defines the sleep mode; MSS can energy down when there is no traffics arrival in downloading time. Choosing sleep mode type for certain traffic type is outside of the scope of the standard. Hence, we propose a decision rule to choose an appropriate sleep mode for various traffic types including, individually, E-mail, WWW, and FTP. Energy consumption and delay are analysed in the research.
