There has been tremendous awareness regarding global warming and its effects on climate change. It has been determined that greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction is the key to mitigating global warming. The herbal supplements industry is experiencing rapid growth and is closely tied to agriculture. Climate change can have significant impacts on the herbal supplements industry.
This thesis presents a comprehensive case study conducted on a herbal extracts manufacturer to quantify its greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. The primary objective of this study was to assess the environmental impacts and energy usage patterns of the organization's operations. The research process followed a systematic approach, including data collection, calculations, and analysis.
The study began by familiarizing ourselves with the terminology commonly used in the field of environmental impact assessment. Relevant data, including energy usage and emissions, were collected from the organization's records. The collected data were then converted into carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) to enable meaningful analysis and comparison.
Two main categories of calculations were performed to facilitate comprehensive analysis. The first involved quantifying the GHG emissions, which required applying emission factors and usage information to calculate emissions from sources such as natural gas and gasoline. The second category focused on analyzing energy consumption, where energy usage data and equipment specifications were used to estimate electricity consumption by different departments.
The findings revealed that the production department accounted for the largest share of GHG emissions, contributing 79% of the total. The laboratory department followed, contributing 18%, while the administrative department had a smaller share of 3%. Energy consumption by equipment within each department was also analyzed, providing valuable insights into energy usage patterns.
This study contributes to the understanding of the environmental impacts and energy consumption by a herbal extracts manufacturer. The findings can serve as a foundation for implementing sustainability measures, identifying areas for improvement, and informing decision-making processes to reduce GHG emissions and enhance energy efficiency in similar industries.
