Bedtime procrastination is defined as failing to go to bed at the intended time, while no external circumstances prevent a person from doing so (Kroese et al., 2014). The study hypothesizes that due to limited self-control resources, individuals experience self-control resources depletion and then lead to bedtime procrastination. Besides, this study is also curious about how to decrease the harm of bedtime procrastination. Therefore, drawing upon the theory of conservation of resources, the study hypothesizes that interpersonal harmony can reduce the negative effect of state self-control depletion as well as bedtime procrastination.
Previous studies have examined the impact of trait self-control and chronotype on bedtime procrastination. Most of them focus on individual characteristics and recruit student participants. However, there is little research regarding workplace professionals. Hence, this study wants to explore whether employees’ state self-control depletion will lead to bedtime procrastination. Furthermore, the study investigates how bedtime procrastination influences next-day work performance. Also, this research wants to figure out whether interpersonal harmony can help employees to conserve resources and then moderate the negative effect from state self-control depletion and bedtime procrastination. The study uses Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) , Multiple SEM, and Monte Carlo methods for data analysis.
As anticipated, research findings indicate that state self-control depletion has a positive impact on bedtime procrastination. Although the mediating effect of bedtime procrastination on the relationship between state self-control depletion and job performance did not reach statistical significance, the study found that workplace interpersonal harmony serves as a moderating variable. It can effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of bedtime procrastination on job performance. In the moderated mediation model, under conditions of high interpersonal harmony, higher state self-control depletion is associated with better job performance; whereas under conditions of low interpersonal harmony, higher state self-control depletion is associated with poorer job performance. Finally, the contributions and limitations of the research will be discussed, and feasible directions for future research will be proposed.
