Brainstorming is a widely applied creative method in various design and innovation activities, especially effective in solving complex and dynamic problems. This method leverages group intelligence to spark and combine different thoughts, producing innovative solutions. As society ages, the experience and wisdom of older adults are increasingly valued, becoming indispensable resources in innovation and design activities. However, existing brainstorming tools in the market are rarely tailored to the operational habits and cognitive characteristics of older adults, limiting their creative potential. This study, through participatory design methods, collaborates with older adults to develop a set of brainstorming tool cards and related activity processes suitable for their use. The goal is to improve their participation and effectiveness in creative activities.
The study begins with a deep understanding of the needs of older adults in the creative process, including their preferences and challenges. Based on this, new tools were co-developed with older adults and practically applied in subsequent participatory workshops to collect feedback. The results show that the newly developed tools significantly enhance older adults' creative thinking and participation in activities. The older adults expressed satisfaction with the improved tool cards, particularly in terms of usability and the ability to stimulate creative thinking. These feedbacks confirm the effectiveness of the participatory design process and suggest directions for further improvement. Notably, the study's participant selection and geographical scope are limited, meaning the results may primarily apply to older adults in Tainan. Future research could expand to different regions and cultural backgrounds to further verify and improve the tool's universality and effectiveness.
