Over the past decade, technology, the internet, and a surge in online streaming platforms have radically disrupted the media and entertainment industry’s value chain, directly impacting the type of content that is created and the media businesses, talents, and crew that create such content. In fact, a rise in these online streaming platforms is leading to new models of content creation, specifically high-impact, high-value original content that is both profitable and significant for attracting and retaining audiences in the competitive online streaming market. As a result of this shift, streaming platforms and content producers are now compelled to reassess their content creation strategies and the resources they use to create original content.
This study examines an entrepreneur’s role in original content creation on a streaming platform in the digital streaming era. Despite the literature on entrepreneurs' vital contributions to establishing and running successful media ventures, few studies have examined their role as talents in the creation of original content. Given this gap, the study draws on the entrepreneurial ecosystem framework to 1) study the process and strategies entrepreneurs use to create original content in a streaming platform, followed by 2) the elements and resources they leverage from their ecosystem to create original content, and thereby seeks to 3) refocus their role in identifying, working with, and nurturing talents in the digital streaming era. To achieve this, the researcher purposefully selected Mr. Jay Lin, the founder and CEO of GagaOOLala, a global LGBTQ+ focused streaming platform from Taiwan, as the chief informant for the semi-structured, in-depth interviews and participatory observations that guided the internship-based case study approach of this qualitative study.
Based on thematic analysis of the data, the findings of the study reveal that original content creation in the case of GagaOOLala has pivoted from being driven primarily by authentic, artistic aspirations to one focused on commercial output and gains, with a strong emphasis on intellectual property ownership and control of the original content. In regards to the emphasis on the IP value of the original content, the entrepreneur is observed to rely on and leverage a combination of elements within his entrepreneurial ecosystem for the creation of the original content, whereby the talents, or human capital, are considered to be the most crucial element, and are directly embedded within the creative entrepreneurial ecosystem of GagaOOLala. Taking into account the importance of talents in the original content creation entrepreneurial ecosystem of GagaOOLala, it is concluded that the development of talents in the digital streaming era requires the constant exchange and sharing of skills, knowledge, and resources between the entrepreneur and his team so that they are able to adapt to the changes and explore new possibilities in the disruptive world of the media and entertainment industry.
