外銷蓪草畫（Export Paintings on Pith），以中國的一種植物「通脫木」的髓心加工成畫紙，進行創作的外銷畫作媒材之一。這種基底材料易攜帶又成本低廉，視覺圖像映照出十九世紀的中國社會百態，迅速風靡中外，成為西方人歸國的伴手禮。
廣州畫師身居中西文化交流的交會點上，受到西畫東漸的影響，接觸了西方繪畫技法，繼而創作迎合西方人喜好的蓪草畫。隨著西方傳教士、宮廷洋畫家與來華西方畫家的到來，不約而同地改動中國的傳統繪畫模式；更是促發廣州民間畫師群體出現。外銷蓪草畫經由不同的畫師、畫工們一同創作，因此在繪製風格上，不僅不同程度地結合西方與中國的表現技法，亦展現中國趣味的圖像；在視覺圖像方面，呼應了西方文化在中國民間社會的變動，亦可藉此窺見廣州社會的縮影。
做為中國外銷藝術的種類而言，外銷蓪草畫作為獨立研究對象進行討論並不多，以往皆以其視覺圖像所反映的社會文化內涵進行探討。因此，本研究試著聚焦於外銷蓪草畫的視覺圖像，觀察其在特定時空背景中的發展進程，繼而探究其題材內容與畫面形式在中西文化交流的脈絡中所展現的時代風格。

“Export Paintings on Pith” is a kind of export paintings. It made from the pith of the plant “Tetrapanax Papyrifer” in Guangzhou area. Because of the basic material is portable, inexpensive, and the painting content reflects all aspects of Chinese society in the 19th century, made it becoming a popular gift for Westerners returning to China.
Guangzhou painters were standing at the crossroads of East-West Cultural Exchange, influenced by Eastern Transition of Western Painting, came into contact with Western painting skills, and created “Export Paintings on Pith” to cater Westerners preferences. With western missionaries, court painters and western painters to China, they coincidentally changed the traditional Chinese painting style; moreover, they prompted the emergence of a group of Guangzhou painters. The “Export Paintings on Pith” were created by different artists and painters. In terms of painting style, they not only combined Western and Chinese expression techniques to different degrees, but also showed images of Chinese interest. And the part of visual images, they echoed the changes of Western culture in Chinese civil society, and could also be seen in the microcosm of Guangzhou society.
As a type of Chinese export art, “Export Paintings on Pith” has not been discussed as an independent object of study, and in the past, it has always been studied in terms of the social and cultural connotations reflected by its visual images. Therefore, this study focuses on the visual images of “Export Paintings on Pith”, observing its development in a specific spatial and temporal context, and then exploring its thematic content and pictorial forms in the context of the cultural exchange between China and the West.
