Living in this era, full of modern technology, people are pursuing a higher quality of life and more solutions to satisfy individual needs. In medical care, people are no longer content with basic medical and surgical treatment which mandates a higher quality in standard of care.
Cataracts occur when incident light is unable to reach the retina due to opacification of the eye’s crystalline lens. The treatment is to remove the opacified lens, replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). However, similar to other intraocular surgical risks, endophthalmitis can occur. Endophthalmitis caused by post-surgical intraocular infection is difficult to treat and often leads to patient blindness. A bactericidal intraocular lens that is made of nanomaterial with photocatalyst property would be an effective method to prevent the infection. Furthermore, this nano-IOL can also prevent post surgical after cataract, a condition due to proliferation of the epithelium of the leftover lens’ capsule.
This study is to investigate the property and effects of the nano-IOL’s photocatalysis for the purpose of reducing the rate of post-surgical intraocular infection and after cataract to increase patient’s satisfaction and quality of life.
