許多無尾類雄性個體會在生殖季時聚集鳴叫,形成合唱團。合唱團中個體數量多寡會影響聲音訊號的特質,同種個體則可利用合唱團發出的聲音訊號定位適當的生殖場。日本樹蛙在生殖季時經常成群,少見單獨鳴叫個體,合唱團聲音可能帶有重要的溝通訊號。本研究欲探討日本樹蛙合唱團大小和聲音特質的關係,並了解聲音特質變化是否會影響雄蛙和雌蛙的趨聲行為。實驗在扇平地區進行,在野外對日本樹蛙合唱團進行錄音,並記錄合唱團內雄蛙個體數。錄音分析結果顯示,合唱團鳴叫努力度隨著個體數增加而增加,但個體數超過20隻以上時,努力度達飽和不再增加;合唱團音量則和個體數呈現正相關,當合唱團越大,整體鳴叫音量也會越大。以野外錄音分析結果為基礎,合成代表大小合唱團的聲音,包括不同努力度、不同音量、努力度和音量同時改變等三組,以及大小合唱團的野外錄音檔,將這些聲音對雌蛙和雄蛙進行單一聲源的回播實驗。結果發現,雌蛙會趨向音量高的合成聲音;音量不夠大時,不論努力度高或低,均不引起趨聲反應。雄蛙會趨向努力度中或高的合成聲音;努力度中等時,音量高低都會引起趨聲反應;但努力度高且音量大時,雄蛙不會趨向聲源。野外錄音則不能引起個體的趨聲性。雌蛙和雄蛙都會趨近代表中大型合唱團的合成聲音,但因生殖需求和競爭等因素,對回播聲音的反應不完全相同。實驗結果顯示日本樹蛙個體能夠分辨不同聲音特質,有選擇性地趨近中大型合唱團,可能因此能夠找到適當生殖場、降低個體被捕食風險或提高配對機會。
In anurans, chorus sounds produced by aggregated males are conspicuous signals that could be used as beacons for individuals to locate breeding sites. Different numbers of males produce chorus sounds with different characteristics and may influence the phonotactic behaviors of the conspecifics. Japanese Buerger’s Frogs, Buergeria japonica, form choruses in breeding seasons and males seldom call alone. The chorus sounds might be important in communication during reproduction. In this study, the relationships between chorus size and sound characteristics, and phonotactic responses of the males and females to different characteristics of the chorus sounds were investigated. The results showed that as the chorus size increased, calling efforts increased then leveled off as the number of males exceeded 20. A positive linear relationship between chorus size and sound pressure levels was also observed. Based on the observation of chorus sounds, different stimuli were designed and played back to evaluate the effect of calling efforts and sound pressure levels on phonotactic behaviors of the males and females. Females approached the synthetic stimuli with high sound pressure levels. Males approached the synthetic stimuli with median or high calling efforts, but not the stimuli with high calling efforts and high sound pressure levels. Both sexes didn’t approach the field-recorded chorus sounds from large and small choruses. The results showed that male and female Japanese Buerger’s Frogs could use the characteristics of chorus sounds to approach the median or large choruses, and probably benefit from associating with the groups of conspecifics during reproduction.
