This research aims to find new heuristic evaluation principles especially narrow down for instructional video sharing platforms according to the original heuristic evaluation principles. Extending the original heuristic evaluation principles generated by Jakob Nielsen’s, this research is focusing on developing and finding the new evaluation principles on instructional video sharing platforms but not just for the general interfaces.
This research took two different instructional video sharing platforms as the research subjects. One is TEDTalks official website and another one is TEDTalks YouTube channel. And also this research took two kinds of usability methods to find the usability problems, Usability Testing and Heuristic Evaluation. The participants took part in the usability testing experiment to accomplish the setting tasks. We analyzed the data according to the results from usability testing. Heuristic evaluation is also one of the methods to find the usability problems in this research. Experts in user experience domain were asked to finish the heuristic evaluation questionnaires by themselves. In the end of the two experiments, according to the literature review and the user experience, there are lots of similar situations have been pointed out and few have not been listed down in the literature review. Those have not been listed down are likely to consider adding into the new heuristic evaluation principles especially for instructional media sharing platform. The arranged results from usability testing and heuristic evaluation were listed down to do the comparison and analysis.
Analyzing from the two results, there comes one phenomenon happened in the two experiments which is “Attention”. There are lots of conditions refers to the phenomenon. Therefore, in order to check the new adding principle is in relationship to “Attention”, we built up a new heuristic evaluation experiment to inspect the new adding evaluation principles with the descriptions and review checklists for the new adding principle.
Results from the new heuristic evaluation has said that the adding new principle was catching the phenomenon more specifically then only with the ten original evaluation principles. The phenomenon were also specifically revised into “Attention Holding”. With the new adding evaluation principle, this research assumes that it is more appropriate to do this new heuristic evaluation especially for instructional video sharing platform.
