Since the financial crisis of 2008, people have doubted about the benefits and drawbacks of financial development. The benefits of financial development seem to be unfairly distributed. This paper attempts to explore the relationship between financial development and income inequality and to predict that a higher developed financial system increase income inequality. This paper uses the OLS method to analyze the panel data of 145 countries during 2009 to 2017. The empirical results present that there is a linear relationship between financial development and income inequality. It represents that the higher development the financial system is, the more unequal the income distribution would be, which is a positive relationship. Additionally, there is a finding that the influence of financial development is not identical to developed and developing countries. Financial development is more significantly positively related to income inequality in developing countries.
