「民主化」一詞是個抽象的概念，泛指一個政體在某些方面朝向民主路程的政治變遷。就緬甸本身發展來看，因長期受軍政府的極權統治，所以比較保守，發展得比較慢。但就這個國家在1988年以後的調整及轉變來看，我們還是可以觀察到有一些突破的跡象，這也是本文研究的主軸所在。

　　本文係以軍政府、翁山蘇姬、以及國際政經情勢等三個方向來解釋緬甸民主化因素，為了方便起見，我們會列舉出幾個重要的概念〈concepts〉與變數〈variables〉，例如以緬甸的社會差異、市民社會、軍政府本身以及國際情勢等，然後就從這些概念與變數間的關係脈絡，提出一些理論層次的研究來藉以顯現出緬甸民主化的跡象與程度，然後藉此架構出緬甸民主化的情形。也希望能在這些狀況中突顯出像緬甸這種較封閉集權的國家的民主化特性。

　　如果開放改革勢在必行，軍政府又不情願放棄既得利益，分享權力，那緬甸會以什麼樣的方式進行民主改革，以符合國際社會的期待？是本文觀察的重點。在結論的部分，本文分析出緬甸民主化可能的型式極可能是軍方所主導之下「部分民主」的型式。另外，在民主化轉型的路徑上，以緬甸可能的民主化型式以及「亞洲威權主義」經濟發展的成功經驗來看，此種民主化轉型的路徑，有別於以往，但似乎又較適合於亞洲國家傳統政體的轉型，值得我們用不同的角度去思考。

　　The word “democratization” is an abstract concept, generally referring to the political transitions caused where a regime is heading towards democracy in certain ways. In the respect of Myanmar,s development, the atmosphere tends to be comparatively conservative and the development is rather slow due to the long-term totalitarian governance of the military regime. However, considering the adjustments and transitions since 1988, we can still spot signs of some breakthroughs, which is also the main axis of this study.

　　This article narrates the democratization factors in three aspects: the military regime, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the conditions of international politics and economy. To make things easier, we will list several important concepts and variables such as the social differences, civil society, the military regime itself and the international status of Myanmar, raise some studies on the theoretical level to reveal the democratizational signs and depth in Myanmar, and base the framing of the situation of Myanmar,s democratization on these. We look forward to characterizing the democratization in more self-contained and centralized countries like Myanmar.

　　If opening-up and reformation is inevitable, while the military regime is not willing to give up the vested interests and power-share, what kind of methods will democratic reformation be conducted with to meet the international society,s expectations? This is the main point of the observation in this study. In the conclusion, it is suggested that the possible form for Myanmar,s democratization will most likely turn into “part-democratization” lead by the military. In addition, on the path towards democratizational reformation, as we study the possible democratization model in Myanmar and the successful examples of the economic development of Asian authoritarianism, we can see a different reformation path from the previous one; nevertheless, this kind of reformation may fit the Asian traditional regimes better. It is worth of being taken into consideration in different ways.
