Within the knowledge economy era, organizational knowledge has been recognized as the most strategic asset of enterprises. It is well known that, among various forms of governance structure, the firm is a better institutional design which could facilitate knowledge process such as knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and knowledge utilization. However, a final conclusion about how to speed the knowledge processes by appropriate organizational process design has not been reached yet.
Crisis is one of the most troublesome environmental factors. As the pace of globalization accelerates, every single organization has to face and prepare for the potential impact of crises. Owing to the limited response time, crisis management is truly a highly knowledge-intensive business process. Only when all members share and integrate their own personal knowledge can the organization pass the crises.
Therefore, when probing into the relationship between organization processes and knowledge processes, this study takes crisis management as the contextual situation. In the light of knowledge-based perspective of the theory of the firm, this study intends to clarify the management challenges resulting from the characteristics of organization knowledge. This study then employs the concept of “knowledge governance” to explore whether these governance mechanisms can accelerate knowledge trade among team members, facilitate knowledge processes and ultimately lead to crisis management success.
This study utilizes survey questionnaires to collect data and adopts multiple and hierarchical regression as analysis method. The results indicate the following evidences. In the first place, the knowledge governance mechanisms (especially delegation, coordination by communication, and incentives offering) help to facilitate the knowledge processes. Secondly, the knowledge processes, particularly the knowledge integration, contribute to the success of crisis management. Thirdly, knowledge processes play an intermediary role in knowledge governance mechanisms and crisis management outcomes.
Lastly, this study also provides some research and managerial implications, suggestion, and research limitation for the future academic and practical efforts.
