This thesis aims mainly to explore the issue of human nature in Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus by using Augustine’s thoughts on Christianity, including his notions of wisdom, soul, sin and the grace of God. These Augustinian thoughts will be employed to interpret Doctor Faustus’ psychological condition and present Faustus as an Augustinian character who is predestined to be condemned after the Fall of Adam and Eve. In addition, this thesis will also try to demonstrate Augustinian notion of evil, friendship and marriage in Doctor Faustus. By reading the text together with Augustine’s thoughts, this thesis hopes to demonstrate that Dr. Faustus is an Augustinian character endowed with Christian morality and theodicy.
