This thesis investigates the relationship between 「the degree of resource similarity between two firms」and their「alliance structure」. The sample covers the strategic alliances disclosed on Wall Street Journal during a ten-year period from January 1995 to December 2004. Logistic regression and hierarchical regression were used to test the hypotheses.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Partner firms tend to contribute the same kind of resources to the strategic alliances when their original firm resources are similar, and tend to contribute different kind of resources when their resource similarity is low. Despite that the relationship is in the same direction as predicted, it is not statistically significant.
2. The relationship between「degree of resource similarity between two firms」and the「alliance structure」is strengthened when the alliance involves equity.
3. The relationship between「degree of resource similarity between two firms」and the「alliance structure」is strengthened when partner firms come from the same country. However, this moderating role of partner nationality is not statistically significant.
4. The relationship between「degree of resource similarity between two firms」and the「alliance structure」is weakened when partner firms come from related industries. However, this moderating role of industry relatedness is not statistically significant.
