Architectural design is a kind of writing by spatial vocabularies. Calligraphy, as an art of writing, is about the form rather than the semantic of words. The cursive script in Chinese calligraphy can be viewed as the expression of the formal essence of the characters employed in writing. The thesis attempts to explore the idea of capturing the formal essence of architectural spaces in the light of that similar to the cursive script of characters.
The study consists of two parts, the discourse and the design:
The discourse argues that the cursive script of Chinese calligraphy can be adopted as a design methodology by its power of capturing key features to characterize a given form, be it a character or an architecture. The design part begins with a series of analyses and exercises based on the great Zen master Huai-su’s work to develop technical skills of expressing and re-expressing the essential from the superficial. The study ends with a design project of resort village by the shoreline of Tainan city, which demonstrates the vision of creating the maximal from the minimal.
