Lois Lowry’s Son explores the journey of Claire, a teenage girl who is assigned as a vessel. In a well-regulated community, Claire finds that she is not satisfied with the life she has. Different from other vessels, Claire has a special feeling toward the baby she gives birth to. However, according to the regulations in the community, the baby will be assigned to a family by the committees and she has no right to stay with him. This thesis aims to discover how women are disciplined in different societies and how Claire transforms from a vessel to a mother, learning what “love” is on her journey. The thesis covers three chapters. Chapter One demonstrates how the residents are regulated by the system of Panopticon and technology in the community, and then discusses the injustices which are enforced in the name of equality, and how these regulations further influence the teenage girls who are being assigned as the role of a vessel and produce docile bodies. Chapter Two focuses on how Claire is disciplined as a docile pregnant body and why being a birthmother provides an opportunity for Claire to escape from the community. The focus then moves from the community to the isolated village where Claire reconstructs her identity as a mother. Chapter Three aims to discuss the development of Claire’s new identity as a mother and how she learns to express her maternal love. Through her learning, Claire is mentally and physically disciplined by another Panopticon named ideal motherhood. Though through Claire’s journey, Lowry portrays the impossibility of being freed from disciplines, Claire’s escape from the community allows her to possess a certain degree of agency that allows her to choose her future path.
