近年來國內四大都會區已逐漸成形，中心都市（台北、台中、台南、高雄）總人口數約為600萬。本研究蒐集整理近百年來國內四大都會區之人口集居地發展與交通路網建設之相關資料，對照國外都市人口集居的空間發展型態，歸納分析台灣都市發展過程中所出現的蔓延發展型態與國外都市有所不同，其主要差異在於國內都會區在都市化過程中之人口蔓延型態為線型，此一發展型態係沿省道或縣道發生；與國外沿高速公路成蛙躍式點狀蔓延不同。

Four major metropolitan areas have been shaped gradually In Taiwan; the total numbers of people in these center cities (Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohshung) are about 6,000,000. This research collect the trends of the population movement and infrastructure built sequence for the past 100 years in the four metropolitan areas to find the urban sprawl patterns in Taiwan, also compared the patterns in Taiwan with other foreign metropolises.

We found that the morphology as urbanized in Taiwan metropolises is almost strip development. The developed habitat along the route in Taiwan is different from observed foreign cities’ discontinuing development, too.
