園林的豐厚底蘊，值得一再以不同的視野來重新閱讀。傳統上對園林多從「畫境」來討論，本文則藉「遊」的理解而以「路徑」作為重新探索的基礎，並且由「盤腸陣」發展操作分析的方法。

「盤腸陣」為傳統的吉祥圖案，同時也是陝北秧歌的儀式中，隊伍行進的路線圖，其主要特色是以迂迴交錯的隊形，配合樂隊之演奏，扭身晃步前進，而能在有限的範圍內，走出盤旋莫測的變化，這也類似園林的某些特質，所謂「咫尺山林，多方勝景」，以有限而邀無窮。在這個理解的基礎上，開始「盤腸陣」一系列的演練，其中也發現與園林有許多異曲同工之處。

分析演練的部分有二：

1.陣遊：分析測試「盤腸陣」開展空間之可能，得其方法，並以此對傳統園林進行新的閱讀。

2.成法：取明代程羽文「小蓬萊」之意，合「盤腸陣」之體，落腳台南竹溪寺畔，化陣為園。

「盤腸陣」由路徑虛體而生，但亦可作為實體之演繹，而一系列的操作成果則呈現三項重要的特徵：首尾相連、相互依存、有限中的極大變化，藉此來作為園林之「比擬」，而後能模擬傳寫，試以提出對園林新的體會，進而開展空間新的機緣。

Traditionally, the art of Chinese garden making is discussed in terms of the imagery of scenery.
This thesis, instead, attempts to understand the spaces of garden through pathways.
The paper highlights the alternative matrix that is adopted as a systematic method for garden design.

The alternative matrix is a traditional propitious sign, and also a route chart of the yangko, a popular rural folk dance in China.
The matrix provides within a certain boundary various circuitous and continuous routes with fix beginning/ending, which is also the characteristic of garden, to have a sense of boundless space within a limited area.

There are two parts in this thesis:

First, to analysize and observe the possibilities of the alternative matrix and establish a systematic method. It is concluded that the alternative matrix could be derived from the analysis of strolling through various pathways in garden. Then use this method to examine the layout of Chinese garden.

Secondly, with the conception of "The Wonderland" (written by Cheng Yu Wen, Ming Dynasty) as imagery scenery, and the alternative matrix as design approach, to exemplify Chinese gardens by a case work in Tainan Zhu Xi Temple.

This design method helps to generate the form of both void and solid whole. Space in the matrix is continuous with fix beginning/ending, interdependent and composite of boundless variation within a limited space. This is a systematic design method arousing new possibilities in the making of Chinese garden.
