  • Background: Knowledge and attitude are known to influence the quality of palliative care. However, palliative care services in primary health care units are at the early stage in Indonesia. There is a lack of studies to investigate primary care health professionals’ knowledge and attitudes regarding palliative care.
Purpose: To explore primary care health professionals’ palliative care knowledge and attitudes.
Methods: A descriptive correlational design with convenience sampling was conducted from August 2017 to February 2018 at 70 primary health care units in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 530 primary care health professionals working at these units were invited to participate in the study. The questionnaire included three parts, background information, palliative care knowledge, and palliative care attitudes.
Results: A total of 516 primary care health professionals, including 143 physicians and 373 nurses completed the questionnaire survey. The mean score of knowledge was 7.83 (SD = 3.31) out of 20 possible scores and attitudes was 107.24 (SD = 7.50) out of 150 indicating limited knowledge and moderate positive attitudes toward palliative care. Primary care health professionals’ demographic characteristics, working experiences, and professional education in palliative care were associated with knowledge and attitudes. Primary care health professionals having better knowledge tended to demonstrate more positive palliative care attitudes (p < .05). Primary care health professionals with better palliative care knowledge were more likely to have comfortability to care terminally ill patients in the future (OR = 1.06, p = .035), whereas those with better attitudes toward palliative care were more likely to have comfortability to care terminally ill patients in the future (OR = 1.04, p < .001).
Conclusions: Primary care health professionals demonstrated limited knowledge and moderate positive attitudes toward palliative care. Policy and education programs in palliative care in primary health care units should be addressed in Indonesia.
Keywords: Attitude, Knowledge, Palliative Care, Primary Health Care.
