  • Background: Postpartum depression has caught more public health attention due to the high prevalence and significant adverse effects. The prevalence of postpartum depression varies in different periods of postpartum.
Purpose: The purposes of the study was to compare the postpartum depressive symptoms between the 7th-day and the 40th-day postpartum periods and identify related factors of postpartum depressive symptoms score overtime.
Methods: A prospective study design with two time measurement was carried out in sample of 124 women at 7th-day and the 40th-day postpartum. A convenience sampling method was used to recruited sample from primary health care in West Java between September 2017 and March 2018. Demographic characteristics and Indonesian version of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were used for data collection. Chi-square and linear fixed effect model were performed for statistical analysis.
Results: Results showed that the prevalence of postpartum depressive symptoms was 33.9% and 30.6% at the 7th-day and the 40th-day postpartum period, respectively. Younger age, delivery complication, multiparous women, mother as postpartum key helper and breastfeeding practice were identified as significant factors contributing to postpartum depressive symptoms over time.
Conclusion: The level of postpartum depressive symptoms in current study decreased over time from the 7th-day and the 40th-day postpartum period. Delivery complication and younger age were significant factors to higher postpartum depressive symptoms. Meanwhile, multiparous women, women who have their mother stayed as postpartum key helper, and women who breastfeed her baby experienced less depressive symptoms.
