The impedance probe was realized by Oya (1966) who was inspired by the calculation of probe impedance in plasma by Balmain (1964) (Oya called this probe as “gyro-plasma probe” initially).
The impedance Probe system is a powerful instrument for measuring the electron density, which is one of the fundamental parameters in the Ionosphere. The purpose of this thesis is to develop impedance probe for future ionosphere survey missions in Taiwan. In this thesis, we have derived the principle of the impedance probe and designed the electric circuit system to measurement the electron density in the altitude range of 120km to 1000km in the ionosphere. We have developed three different impedance probe systems and compared their performance in the Space Plasma Operation Chamber at the Plasma and Space Science Center of the National Cheng Kung University.
