In this research work, coaxial electrospinning technique was used to fabricate the chitosan (CS)/sodium alginate (SA) core-sheath nanofibers from the solutions of these biopolymers and the addition of polyethylene oxide (PEO). Chitosan-based nanofibers with surface-immobilized silver nanoparticles were achieved by the preloaded silver nitrate in the SA sheath, followed by the argon plasma synthesis. The core-sheath nanofibers with Ag NPs demonstrated the promising antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. The addition of SA into sheath solution reinforced the chitosan nanofibers in term of their water resistance because of the ionic crosslinking between amine groups of chitosan and carboxyl groups of sodium alginate covering and protecting chitosan cores. Chitosan nanofiber structure remained stable even after 8-hr washing in a pH4 aqueous solution. The morphologies of these core-sheath nanofibers were evidenced by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The plasma-synthesized Ag NPs were also characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Other characterization techniques, including infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), provided other material information to these unique core-sheath nanofibers.
