隨科技進步，土木工程技術發展成熟，傳統所追求的功能、安全等「真」的目標，已經無法滿足現今需求，民眾對於美的意識逐漸高漲，求善、求美將成為未來工程之重點。土木工程師所設計的構造物通常被遮蓋而不為人所見，因此在美學領域少有發揮的舞台，橋梁為最能展現結構力與美的作品，土木工程師可以主導，但因缺乏美學的訓練，在面對橋梁美學設計嶄新議題時有所不足。
本研究探討如何於橋梁設計中加入美學考量，建立出橋梁美學檢核表，供土木工程師設計橋梁時使用。首先回顧橋梁、美學、藝術等相關文獻，建立橋梁考量美學架構，架構以三維座標呈現，傳統橋梁設計著重實體的功能、安全、經濟面以外，加上橋梁與現地之整合，以及結構表現形式原理，依循此架構提出橋梁美學檢核表。並訪談有橋梁設計經驗之工程師與建築師，了解兩者設計考量的差異。最後藉由案例分析，以國內外橋梁演練檢核表，說明此檢核表的效果。
橋梁美學的表現，受設計者美學素養影響甚大，然而個人美學素養的培養非一蹴可及。所發展之橋梁美學檢核表，並非遵守即能設計出美麗作品，而是提供橋梁工程師於設計時做為入門工具，降低橋梁美學跨越的門檻。盼透過美學領域初探之成果，能為工程師搭起一座橫越工程與美學的橋梁。

Civil engineering structures traditionally are designed and constructed to encompass function and safety, but aesthetic aspects are becoming required nowadays. Civil engineers lack the aesthetics stage to display their products that are usually embedded and hardly seen by people. For example, the foundation is not seen and the building out looking is designed by the architect. The bridge structure, however, is the limited product that can display force and beauty and the design is guided by civil engineers. But engineers lack the training in incorporating aesthetic elements into design.
This research explores how to add aesthetic considerations into bridge design and establishes a checklist for it. Relative references such as bridge, aesthetics, and art were reviewed first to establish an esthetics framework for bridge design. The framework is presented by a three dimensional coordinate. In addition to the traditional design goals of function, safety, and economy, the bridge/place integration and the structural form principles were added. The aesthetic checklist for bridge design was developed based on this framework. Engineers and architects who have bridge design experiences were interviewed to explore the differences in their design considerations. A case study was lastly conducted on two bridges to analyze the checklist’s effect.
The derived checklist and its check items or rules will not guarantee a beautiful bridge. Instead, they can be used as a tool or guidance by engineers when facing aesthetics issues in bridge design. It is hoped the checklist will bridge the gap between the engineering and aesthetic aspects.
