This study focuses on developing a head-down free smartphone application for blind people and those who may be inconvenient to watch the screen directly. In this paper, such an application program is implemented on an Android system to provide users with easy access to the web browser, and it also provides some utilities for blind users. Six features are proposed: (1) Read web pages: Web contents can be read out; (2) Simplify web contents: Advertisements and pictures in the original web pages are filtered out automatically, and only the article in text is left. Hence a user can find it easier to locate the text; (3) Gesture detection: six gestures were proposed instead of tapping to operate the application. These gestures are to replace the functions such as go to the next level, and select the icon, etc. (4) My favorite list: Store web links that users are most interested; (5) News: Daily news can be selected and read out easily; (6) Search nearby restaurants: Locate the nearby restaurants and provide public transportation information to those restaurants. Two blind persons and three students were invited to test out the proposed application. In this study, the proposed evaluation method is the single-object ABAB reversal design and we made a comparison between the proposed application and VoiceOver of iPhone. Results show that the test users feel that proposed application is better than VoiceOver.
