本論文以1951至1981年間《台糖通訊》與台糖攝影社成員所拍攝的三萬餘張底片為核心，探討戰後臺灣紀實攝影在產業現代化、農村社會轉型及國家政策建構中的角色與意義。這批珍貴影像由台糖資深員工孫世欽意外保存，內容涵蓋工廠運作、農民生活、社區節慶與農業技術等，為重構戰後臺灣經濟與社會史提供了重要的視覺材料。
論文結合歷史文獻分析、攝影美學風格分析與訪談法，參照美國農業安全局（FSA）於大蕭條時期推動之攝影紀錄計畫，說明紀實攝影如何於危機時期成為政府政策推廣與公共溝通的媒介。FSA攝影師如沃克·埃文斯與多蘿西亞·蘭格之作品，不僅深遠影響後世紀實攝影發展，也成為臺灣農村視覺再現的重要參照。
台糖攝影社成員朱義朝及其他成員延續郎靜山沙龍攝影的沙龍風格，融合FSA風格與《豐年》雜誌攝影師楊基炘的影像語法，創作出兼具紀實性與藝術性的農業影像。該批作品不僅記錄農村生活、勞動場景與農工技術革新，並曾刊載於《台糖通訊》，見證台美冷戰合作下的農業現代化歷程。筆者透過訪談孫世欽與研讀《台糖通訊》文獻檔案，補充影像背後的創作動機與歷史脈絡。由於主要攝影者朱義朝已故，研究僅能依據文獻與檔案影像進行風格與歷史推論，並以筆者的美學背景；以構圖、趣味、歷史為基礎，從三萬多張照片中擇取60張具代表性的作品進行深入圖像分析。
筆者研究《台糖通訊》與其影像不僅為企業檔案，更為戰後臺灣紀實攝影提供豐富的研究資源，並為農業與社區歷史的視覺建構奠定深厚文化基礎。在當代地方文化保存、土地再利用與產業轉型的脈絡中，這些視覺資料可以成為文化資產檔案與社會記憶再生的重要依據。

This thesis centers on over 30,000 photographic negatives taken between 1951 and 1981 by members of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taiwan Sugar) Photography Club, as well as images published in the Taiwan Sugar Newsletter, to explore the role and significance of postwar documentary photography in Taiwan's industrial modernization, rural social transformation, and national policy construction.
These valuable images, serendipitously preserved by veteran Taiwan sugar employee Sun Shih-Chin, cover a wide range of subjects including factory operations, farmers' lives, community festivals, and agricultural technologies, providing crucial visual materials for reconstructing Taiwan's postwar economic and social history.
Combining historical document analysis, photographic aesthetics, and interview methods, this study references the Farm Security Administration (FSA)'s photography program launched during the Great Depression in the United States to illustrate how documentary photography served as a medium for governmental policy promotion and public communication during times of crisis. Works by FSA photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange profoundly influenced later developments in documentary photography and served as important references for the visual representation of rural Taiwan.
Taiwan Sugar photographer Chu Yi-Chao and other members extended the poetic style of Lang Jingshan’s salon photography, blending it with the documentary approach of the FSA and the visual language of Harvest magazine photographer Yang Chi-Hsin. Chu created agricultural images that combine documentary realism with artistic expression. Those works not only faithfully recorded rural life, labor scenes, and agricultural and industrial innovations, but also appeared in the Taiwan Sugar Newsletter, bearing witness to the agricultural modernization process under Cold War-era Taiwan-U.S. cooperation.
Through interviews with Sun Shih-Chin and analysis of Taiwan Sugar Newsletter archives, the study supplements the creative motivations and historical contexts behind these images. As primary photographer Chu Yi-Chao has passed away, the analysis relies solely on existing documents and photographic archives, And with the author's aesthetic background; Based on composition, interest, and history, 60 representative works are selected from more than 30,000 photographs for in-depth image analysis.
This thesis argues that the Taiwan Sugar Newsletter and its imagery are not merely corporate records but constitute a rich resource for the study of postwar Taiwanese documentary photography. They also form a strong cultural foundation for the visual construction of agricultural and community history. In the contemporary context of local cultural preservation, land reuse, and industrial transformation, these visual materials possess significant potential for reinterpretation as cultural assets and regeneration of collective memory.
