在中古世紀芸芸眾生之中,騎士是廣受後人關注、發人興趣的人物。長久以來,不同的文類如傳奇(romance)、諷刺文、詩歌、散文、小說、研究著作、電影等,都不斷地再現(represent)、刻畫騎士的風貌和其風俗(practice)。誠然,沒有中古騎士的出現,傳奇就不可能在中古歐洲各地愈加發展、廣為流傳。此外,也因著傳奇在其主題與騎士有著強烈的連結,所以特別受王公貴族(royal household)謂為生活之娛樂。另一方面,隨著日漸發展、宮廷聽眾/讀者(audience)增加,傳奇不僅反映中古騎士的思維(concept)和文化,也在騎士制度的發展中扮演要角。可見,騎士與傳奇之間有著相互的關係。然而,中古傳奇是如何反映當代的騎士制度?倘若傳奇再現了中古騎士的日常情境,那麼在十四世紀的英國,騎士制度開始衰退的這個時間點,傳奇又是如何在其娛樂大眾的功用之外,向聽眾/讀者呈現騎士的風貌?
本文旨在比較中古騎士及其在中古英國文學作品中的再現(representation),探討此二者之間有何相互關係,抑或是如何相互影響。第一章回顧騎士的傳統(knightly tradition),其中包括騎士的起源、訓練方式、冊封儀式,以及十四世紀時的變遷等等,以探究騎士在中古世紀真實生活中的形象。第二章著重傳奇在中古英國的發展、其主題功能(thematic function),以及對中古騎士的影響。第三章比較騎士與騎士在十四世紀英國傳奇中的再現。論文最後則為騎士在現實生活與文學中的形象的差異提出結論。
Among the diversified personages in the medieval period, the knight appears as one of the figures that receives abundant attention and undeclining interests from his later generations. For centuries, different genres such as romances, parodies, poetry, prose, researches, novels, or movies, have contributed to the representation and vitalization of this character and his knightly practices. Indeed, without the emergence of medieval knight, romance would not be created and circulated throughout medieval Europe. Also, it is also owing to the strong thematic connection with the knight that medieval romance is appreciated as a kind of entertainment especially for the royal household. On the other hand, romance, having its more and more developed plots and wide audience in the court, not only reflects the concept and cultural phenomenon of medieval knights but suggests its importance in the development of knighthood as well. Hence, there is a bilateral influence between the two. However, in what manner does medieval romance echo the ethos of contemporary chivalry? If medieval romances represent the experience of medieval knights in the shade of their daily situation, then during the fourteenth-century England, a time when knighthood was actually in its decline, how would romances respond to the audiences out of the entertaining function?
This thesis, aiming at comparing the knight in the medieval period with the representations of the knight in literary works of medieval England, attempts to investigate how the two domains relate to or how they influence each other. By probing into the knightly tradition, including the origin of the knight, the training practice, the knighting ceremonies, and the transformation in the fourteenth century, Chapter One explores the image of the real knight in the medieval period. Chapter Two focuses on the development of romance in medieval England, its thematic function, and its influence on the medieval knight. Chapter Three makes the comparison between the knight and the knight’s representation in English romances in the fourteenth century. The conclusion serves to end the whole thesis with an analysis of the difference between the knightly images in the real life and the literary domain.
