The global rise in COVID-19 cases has significantly impacted different sectors of society. The global economy does not make an exception, an atypical public health crisis has had a severe impact, leading to the closure of businesses and a significant shift toward digital platforms. Micro Enterprises (MIEs) difficulties driven due to the pandemic have also transformed into great chances for businesses worldwide. Therefore, micro-enterprises aim to enhance their strategic advantage, improve business performance, and achieve growth by implementing digital transformation (DT) and innovation. Micro-enterprises face many challenges and difficulties due to their limited resources and skills. Into the experience of Yogyakarta entrepreneurs, this research investigates the drivers and barriers to technology transformation and innovation in micro enterprises (MIEs) during economic difficulties. This research examines the barriers & challenges and government roles in digital transformation in Yogyakarta’s MIEs.
The authors used a qualitative method to perform in-depth interviews with 50 businesses (MIEs) in Yogyakarta Province. The author transcribed the interview data and used the content analysis process to analyze it and develop a framework for generating concepts. This study identifies several significant obstacles to digital transformation and innovation in MIEs, including a lack of digital technology and capability, a lack of skills and knowledge, a lack of funding, a lack of human resources or staff, the high cost of digital technology, and issues with business permits or company registration/license. Participants or respondents also explained the obstacles to digital transformation and innovation, these factors include the necessary online business skills, marketing challenges in digital platforms, access to reliable internet connectivity, and pandemic regulations like travel restrictions and social distancing. In addition, based on the results of this research, a framework for barriers and challenges, as well as government assistance for digital transformation and innovation in micro-enterprises, is provided.
The findings of this study make a significant contribution to the existing literature on enterprises, with a specific focus on micro-enterprises. The results also highlight several areas that require further empirical research, which could inform the development of programs to support micro-enterprises during economic disruption and instability. This study could serve as a valuable reference point for policymakers in creating government initiatives and strategies to stimulate economic recovery, emphasizing business model innovation, mainly digital enterprises. By taking into account the perspectives of micro-enterprises owners, these initiatives and strategies could be more effective in supporting the growth and sustainability of micro-enterprises. The result also encourages future-aligned research to empower enterprises, especially those in emerging countries, during and after the crisis to navigate the challenges posed by the current crisis and to build resilience for the future.
