As the low birth rate and the advances of medical technology, the world gradually into an aging society. The aging problem cause the elder people to degradation of visual and cognitive response, affecting the efficiency of using the product. Taiwan is a crowded country, motorcycles have become the most popular and flexible means of transportation. But in this such a crowded environment, motorcycle accidents always happen. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Transportation, the domestic motorcycle accident rate of senior citizens is much higher than forty percent. The most reason of the accidents is motorcycle riders did not pay attention to the surroundings, causing the rear car crashes or the collision when changing lanes. The rear-view mirror play a very important role when driving, because in addition to the front view, rear traffic information is also very important. This study aims to investigate the ergonomic preference and visual cognition of senior citizens on rear-view mirror, finding out the design factors of rear-view mirror that suit for senior citizens. The goal of this study is want to raise the driving safety and visual comfortable of rear-view mirror for elder motorcycle riders, reducing traffic accidents. Ergonomic experiments were divided into three stages in this study, we will investigate the difference of visual preference on different shape of the rear-view mirror in first phase. In this stage, we found senior citizens have the highest visual preference on rectangular rear-view mirror. The mirror size to the effect of the visual cognition is the topic of second phase, in the result we found the 1.5 times mirror size have the best response, so senior citizens preferred large rear-view mirror form. The final phase we use regression analysis to probe the relation between the vertical distance of subjects eyes to motorcycle handlebars and the vertical distance of motorcycle handlebars to the center of rear-view mirror surface. In this experiment, we obtained the regression estimation between this two variables. This result can be used on the design of motorcycle rear-view mirror for senior citizens in the future.
