To better understand how a foreign firm choose local partner when forming strategic alliance, this study identified four predictors related to host country factors and foreign firm prior alliance experience characteristics (namely host governance quality, cultural distance, prior alliance experiences and prior host alliance experiences) and investigated how they affect the foreign firm choice between new versus repeated local partner.
The set of hypotheses was empirically tested using 477 dyadic alliances in manufacturing industry, formed in China during year 1996 to 2010 between foreign firm and local China-based partner. Specifically, this study found that greater nationally cultural distance significantly leads to the choice of a repeated over a new partner. The influences of host governance quality, prior alliance experiences, and prior host alliance experiences, however, are not statistically significant.
