Background: Decreasing the time from symptom onset to arrival of a hospital to receive appropriate intervention is an important approach to reduce severe complication of cerebral circulation and prevent death from acute stroke. Although the incidence of stroke increases with age, the average age of stroke victims is getting younger in Vietnam, especially middle-age adults who are at productive phase of life which need special attention. Therefore, to determine pre-hospital delay behavior intention and identify factors associated with pre-hospital delay behavior intention among these two group of people are critical.
Aims: The purposes of this study are to explore stroke pre-hospital delay behavior intention and to determine factors associated with pre-hospital delay behavior intention among Vietnamese middle-age and older adults with high risk of stroke.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June of 2020. A sample size of 90 patients having high risk of stroke was recruited from Hospital District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Pre-hospital delay behavior intention was assessed by Stroke Pre-hospital Delay Behavior Intention (SPDBI) scale. Data analysis included descriptive data analysis, Spearman correlation, and Multiple linear regression.
Results: This study found that the mean SPDBI score was 72.38 (SD = 16.13). The mean score in this study was significantly high, compared to that for Thailand. There were some factors correlated to stroke pre-hospital delay behavior intention, such as age (r = -.30, p = .004), comorbidities (r = .27, p < 0.01), habitual residence (r = -.25, p = .01), personal monthly income (r = -.32, p < 0.01), educational level (r = -.37, p < 0.01). Educational level and comorbidities were found to be the predicting factors to stroke pre-hospital delay behavior intention among this group of patients.
Conclusion: As the number of stroke victims still increases and the mean SPDBI score is relatively high, the health education system should be developed.
