Being called to the bar in 1851, Wilkie Collins did not devote himself to legal practice as a barrister. Rather, he took full advantage of the professional training he had received at Lincoln’s Inn and infused his legal knowledge into his writing career. In many of Collins’s works, there is a recurring portrayal of socially marginalized main characters, their generally disappointing consultation with lawyers, and their winding quest for extrajudicial remedies which subtly reveals a crucial defect lying within the nineteenth century British juridical system—a disparity between legal justice and moral justice. The thesis will focus on the division between these two senses of justice as well as the lawyer-client relationships in the most notable novel by Collins, The Woman in White (1859-1860). In the first chapter, I will provide an overview of the theoretical background on the concepts of legal justice and moral justice. In the second chapter, I will first analyse how the lawyers—Vincent Gilmore, William Kyrle and Mr. Merriman—respond to the disparity between legal justice and moral justice and interact with their clients respectively. After that, I will probe into the way that Walter Hartright faces the disparity between legal justice and moral justice and examine how he takes over the duty from the lawyers to restore justice for his client. By so doing, this paper will demonstrate that, when legal justice comes into conflict with moral justice, an effective lawyer-client relationship may play a decisive role in helping victims find possible solutions to the injustice they face and restore the rights they deserve accordingly.
