Recent research has seen increased attention towards positive solitude and loneliness, particularly due to the emergence of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) resulting from social media use. This study aims to examine the connections between positive solitude/loneliness, social media usage experiences, and FOMO, and whether social media usage experiences mediate the relationship between positive solitude/loneliness and FOMO. Quantitative research involving 429 Taiwanese participants aged 18 to 26 was conducted, utilizing scales like the Positive Solitude Scale, UCLA-3 Loneliness Scale, Information Omission Fear Scale, and Social Media Usage Experience Scale. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, regression analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling using JASP 0.17.1 software. Results show: (1) Positive solitude is negatively linked to FOMO, while loneliness is positively linked. (2) Positive solitude isn't associated with positive social media usage experiences, whereas loneliness correlates positively with negative social media usage experiences. (3) Both positive and negative social media usage experiences positively correlate with FOMO. (4) Positive solitude impacts FOMO through negative social media usage experiences, while loneliness affects FOMO through both positive and negative social media usage experiences. These findings offer insights into the pathways influencing FOMO, aiding in addressing FOMO issues and suggesting directions for future research and interventions to promote mental health.
