本設計論文以地涵都市觀(Landscape Urbanism)的團塊(patch)概念重新詮釋都市空間。團塊類似生態棲地，與周邊環境有連結及排斥的雙面性，保有較強的自我個性，藉此觀念對於城市中複雜衝突的環境做出妥善的回應；地涵的都市觀基本上即是以團塊為空間思維的基礎，並非傳統的格網空間系統，打破建築空間與自然地景之間的隔閡，產生新的都市情境。

論文的研究主旨是提出一個都市設計的方法，以嘉義市為例，進行都市閱讀，從嘉義市的空間結構了解其資源及挑戰，並且全面性的調整都市結構；在新的都市架構下，以團塊的設計格網重塑被分割的都市空間，同時以新轉運街區的設計落實這個概念。同時創造新的空間情境，重新詮釋都市中建築與土地的關係。

Urban patch , a concept related to landscape urbanism , is employed as the main idea of this study to design an urban district . The patch , as analogous to eco-habitat , provides new perspectives to read the complexity of urban space. Landscape Urbanism , based on the idea of patch , differing from grid system in tradition , will break the gulf between landscape and architecture , and create a new urban space .

This study proposes an urban design method starting with an “urban reading” , which analyzes the resources and challenges of Chiayi city and suggests an adjustment plan of urban structure . It is followed by focusing on the design of the new transit center , in which new urban image are created to establish new relationship between architecture and land .
