擊樂器出現在世界各個古老的傳統文化，堪稱為人類樂器的始祖，雖然擊樂器材質種類多元，但因擊打發聲方法一致，通常分為同類樂器。西方軍樂隊常大量使用擊樂器，增加軍隊的磅礡氣勢。在歐洲古典音樂中，作曲家則是依旋律本身，營造出曲子的氣氛或是鋪張效果，並不是音樂主要呈現的重點。在中國傳統文化中，常用在祭典儀式，或是戲曲武場的鑼鼓音樂形式，音樂內容為固定組合形成節奏編排。
　　相較其他樂器，擊樂器的發展和表演形式在20世紀前顯得緩慢和保守。1900年代後，作曲家們想打破傳統的音樂形態，在和聲、調性、曲式上嘗試不同的創新，再加上世界不同文化的樂器交流，和樂器製造的技術提升，使得擊樂器種類更為多元、音色豐富、演奏型態、樂器組合方式多變，其可塑性強，受到作曲家的重視，愈來愈多專為擊樂創作的合奏和獨奏曲出現。
　　本論文旨在建構20世紀擊樂發展的脈絡，第一章先回顧現代音樂中各重點流派的時代背景、各派別的特徵、作品風格。第二章論述現代音樂與擊樂的關係。第三章分析現代樂派中延伸的擊樂音樂元素，從音色、節奏⋯⋯等分析整理。第四章主要是針對現代擊樂的音樂表現，探討擊樂的獨特性，以及擊樂在現代音樂中扮演的角色和未來發展趨勢。

The percussion instruments appeared in all of traditional cultures of the world. Although component materials are variety, the methods of playing are identical. The percussion instruments can be called the ancestor of all the instruments. In the West, musical instruments are often used heavily in marching bands to increase the majestic force of the military. In European classical music, the composer is based on the melody itself, creating an atmosphere or effect of the music, is not playing an important role of the music. In traditional Chinese culture, it is often used in ceremonial rituals or in the form of percussion music in the martial arts field for warrior. The forms of music itself are often in a simple rhythm of a cycle.
In the comparison of other instruments, the development and the performance form of percussion was delay and conservative before the 20th century. After 1900s, trading of musical instruments in different cultures of the world has become popular. And the technological advancement in the manufacture of percussion instruments has enhanced that increasing the possibilities of percussion instruments. Composers wanted to break the traditional music form, trying different innovations in harmony, tone, and style. From then on, percussion pieces not only became diverse, rich, and more complex in many ways, but also have attracted the attention of composers to create more and more ensemble and solo pieces for percussion only.
The purpose of this thesis is to construct the development of percussion. In the first chapter, we review the backgrounds, characteristics, and the style of various key genres. The second chapter discusses the relationship between contemporary music and percussion, and the transformation of percussion in the contemporary music. The third chapter analyzes the musical elements from the material, the tone color, and the rhythm in percussion works. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the performance and uniqueness of contemporary percussion, and what kind of role would percussion play in the development of contemporary music.
