    Summary
This thesis examines the evolution of Islamic revivalist and reformist traditions from the ninth to twentieth centuries as a background to studying Rashid Rida's reform ideas, an Islamic theologian and thinker in the modern Arab world. This study argues that Rashid Rida's reformist thought is best understood as a product of and a departure from preceding trends in the pre-modern era of Islamic reformism. Due to the originality of his reformist thought, Rashid Rida's ideology has significantly impacted the Arab world and has raised powerful echoes in the global Islamic community. Moreover, he was among the influential figures of inspiration behind the development and practice of so-called Salafism. This study thoroughly explores the architecture of Rashid Rida's thought, which this investigation will compare with the past reformists and the interrelation with those current in his milieu to clarify the historical context of modern Islamic reformism and its trends.
