Unlike other museums, historic house museums provide an authentic atmosphere and environment. Historic house museums not only display a single object but also an entire “frozen” period. Because of these special characteristics, historic house museums are gradually receiving more and more attention and have become a new museum category. Personality houses comprise one type of historic house museum and are full of stories of historical figures that evoke curiosity. Personality houses have multiple functions; however, there has been limited discussion on tourist experiences since most literature on this topic considers only cultural preservation. Nowadays, museums are also competitive and have become more visitor-oriented and committed to enhancing the service experience for visitors. It is hoped that this research can make Personality houses a reference for designing both services and tourist experiences.
The conceptual model proposed in this research was developed based on a literature review and the characteristics of Personality houses. Considering the complexity of this issue, a case study and simulation study were conducted. The case study focused on the service process from service creation and design to management and took the characteristics of Personality houses into consideration to improve the tourist experience. A qualitative approach, an open-ended and semi-structured in-depth interview and AR simulation were applied for analysis.
The value of this study is to propose a service process designed specifically for Personality houses and to test the feasibility of augmented reality as a tour guide system. This study provides a possible way of balancing the tourist experience for the tourism industry as well as supporting heritage cultural preservation and a service design process for managers of Personality houses to use as a reference.
