The purposes of this study were to: (a) explore the construction of friendship intension and build a Depth of Friendship Scale for college students in Taiwan to construct the friendship intension in local culture, and figure out the interaction between friends of the college students in Taiwan, (b) investigate the variety of friendship in gender of the college students in Taiwan, (c) examine the relationship between the friendship and empathy of the college students in Taiwan.
Participants were college students in Taiwan. This study was based on samples in Taiwan from 274 college students as pilot sample; 403 college students as determining sample; 478 college students as study samples for the exploration of the relationship between the friendship and empathy. The instruments used in this study included open-ended situational questionnaire, Depth of Friendship Scale and Perspective Taking Story Empathy Scale. The statistical methods used to analyze the data were exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Hotelling T2, one-way repeated measures ANOVA and product-moment correlation.
The results of this study were summarized as following: (a) the theoretical model fitted the data well, not only overall but internal structure model fitted criteria, (b) on five dimensions of friendship, except personal loyalty which didn't achieve the significantly variety of genders, the means of the girls were better than those of the boys on other dimensions, (c) the friendship and empathy of the college students in Taiwan got significantly positive correlation.
Based on the findings in this study, suggestions for future studies and guidances in education were proposed.
