This study compares production-based and consumption-based carbon emission indicators to examine the heterogeneous impacts of international trade on carbon emissions. Using panel data covering 105 countries from 1990 to 2022, the analysis applies the Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (CCE-MG) estimator to systematically assess how import and export activities influence production-based and consumption-based carbon emissions. In addition, it explores the moderating roles of net carbon emission flows, national income levels, and energy prices.
The empirical results show that imports have a significant positive effect on consumption-based carbon emissions, while exports exhibit a mitigating effect. This suggests that changes in trade structure can shape the carbon emissions associated with final consumption. In contrast, production-based carbon emissions are primarily driven by energy consumption and the expansion of economic activity, and the effect of trade openness on these emissions appears relatively indirect. Furthermore, regarding energy prices, the overall impact is limited: gasoline prices have a significant negative effect on production-based carbon emissions in non-OECD countries and also contribute to reducing consumption-based carbon emissions in the full sample.
