In modern times, canes are used as walking aids, mostly by elderly people or those
who have difficulty walking. Based on this phenomenon, using a cane is considered a symbol
of aging disability; combined with the general public's resistance to aging, many elderly
people do not want to use a cane. This research conducted a questionnaire survey on the
current design of canes, and based on the results, a cane was designed to challenge the
stereotypical impression of canes and encourage people to use it. The target population of
this study's design is middle-aged people over 50 years old, with the goal of encouraging
this age group to get used to using a cane before they age. When they actually reach old age,
they will not resist using a cane because they are already used to it.
This study found that there is currently no cane that is considered both modern and
familiar. However, it was found that a cane with certain characteristics can give people a
specific feeling. Based on these findings and previous literature studies, two design strategies
are proposed, and a cane is designed for each. The two new cane designs are evaluated in
the final study. Although they were not successful in presenting modern and familiar
characters, the participants showed more willingness to use the new design than general
canes.
