Due to IT industry matured, the governments around the world view the development of biotech industry as extremely important developmental goals. The academy and practice also are eager to understand the developments of biotech industry and biotech firms. Although the increasing importance of the biotech industry, little has been done in the literature in examining the relationships among the organizational capital, strategic activities, financial capability, R&D capability, and the business performance of the firms. Therefore, this study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the key determinants and to examine the relationships among these determinants, and the business performance of the firms. Based on these determinants, hypotheses were proposed and then examined through an empirical study.
The population in the study originated from the database of The Bioworld Online. The profiles of 1711 firms were collected during September 2002.
The major finding of this study include: According to results of the regression analyses:First, the results show support for the direct effects of organizational capital and strategic activities on financial capability and R&D capability. Secondly, the results suggest that organizational capital, strategic activities, financial capability and R&D capability have direct impacts on the firms’ business performance. Finally, the results also show direct effects of financial capability on R&D capability.
