This research explores the impact of different product design processes on knowledge creation within industrial design education. The study specifically compares the conventional product development process and the lean product development process, focusing on how each influences the flow and transformation of knowledge among design students. The research objectives are to identify differences in knowledge creation activities, examine the conversion of tacit and explicit knowledge, and determine key factors affecting knowledge flow and innovation.
A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The quantitative component utilized validated questionnaires to assess knowledge creation ability of students and knowledge creation practice in the design process, structured according to the SECI model (Socialization, Externalization, Combination, Internalization). The qualitative component involved semi-structured interviews with students who participated in product development projects, allowing for a deeper understanding of team interactions and knowledge management practices.
Results indicate that while both groups of students demonstrated similar levels of knowledge creation ability, the lean product development process significantly enhanced students’ capabilities in externalizing and combining knowledge, particularly through the use of structured tools and data-driven approaches. However, no significant differences were found in socialization and internalization dimensions, suggesting that team culture and long-term learning play a more critical role in these aspects. The findings highlight the complementary strengths of both processes: lean methods foster efficiency and clarity in knowledge expression and integration, whereas conventional processes support systematic knowledge preservation and cross-team collaboration.
In conclusion, the study recommends integrating the strengths of both design processes to create a learning environment that balances innovation speed with sustainable knowledge management. These insights offer valuable guidance for curriculum design in higher education.
