With the growing emphasis of empathy in design field, designers with empathy are more expected to experience and understand the emotional concern of their users. Therefore, these designers’ products can approach users’ internal demands. In order to develop the empathy of future designers, it is important to include the empathy fostering program in design education. The empathy fostering exercise in this research is the combination of Design Thinking and Feshbach’s three empathy component model: discriminating affective cues in others, perspective taking, and emotional responsiveness. The main research purpose is to explore what sort of empathy fostering exercise can develop the empathy of design students. And the research method is quasi experiment. The result of the study shows that the empathy fostering exercise has the value of education for arousing design students’ discriminating affective cues in others, perspective taking, and emotional responsiveness. Also, this exercise has the potential to help students with weaker empathic concern develop emotional responsiveness.
Since there is not so many studies about empathy cultivating in design field, hope this research can be the basis of future empathy fostering programs of design education.
